Can I Get Botox in the Summer? Sun Safety and Injectables
When the Oklahoma summer heat arrives, our skincare routines naturally shift. We put away the heavy winter creams, pause our aggressive chemical peels, and delay any intense laser treatments until the fall to avoid sun-related complications.
Because we talk so much about "summer-safe" skincare, one of the most common questions we get at KC Wellness is: "Do I need to pause my Botox until the fall, too?"
The short answer is: No, absolutely not! In fact, summer is one of the most popular times for injectables at our clinic inside Refined OKC. Whether you are prepping for a summer wedding or just want to look refreshed for your family vacation, here is everything you need to know about getting Botox and Dysport during the sunniest season of the year.
Why Injectables are Summer-Safe
The reason we pause treatments like the Sciton BBL or deep chemical peels during the summer is because those treatments target the surface of the skin and interact with pigment. If your skin is healing from a laser and gets exposed to UV rays, it can cause hyperpigmentation.
Neuromodulators (like Botox and Dysport) work completely differently. We inject the product beneath the skin directly into the targeted muscle to gently relax it. It does not remove any layers of skin, it does not use heat, and it does not make your skin more photosensitive. Therefore, having a summer tan or spending time outdoors will not negatively impact your injectable results.
Preventing the "Summer Squint"
Summer is actually an incredibly strategic time to get Botox. Think about what your face does when you forget your sunglasses on a bright July afternoon at Lake Hefner. You squint.
Constant squinting against the bright Oklahoma sun is one of the leading causes of crow’s feet (the lines around the outer corners of your eyes) and the "11s" (the deep furrows between your eyebrows). By proactively treating these areas with Dysport or Botox ($13.00/unit), Kelli gently relaxes those muscles. You physically won't be able to squint as hard, which prevents those deep wrinkles from forming in the first place!
The "Less is More" Summer Vibe
Summer beauty is all about looking effortless. You don't want to look heavily made-up or "frozen." Our Nurse Injector, Kelli Cossey, RN, BSN, is known for her conservative approach. She strategically places units to soften your expressions while preserving your natural movement. You will look rested, hydrated, and naturally youthful—the perfect complement to your summer glow.
Summer Aftercare Rules
While the sun itself won't ruin your Botox, the heat can play a factor on the day of your treatment.
Stay Cool for 24 Hours: For the first 24 hours after your injections, we ask that you avoid excessive heat. This means no intense, sweaty outdoor workouts, no saunas, and no lying flat on a hot pool deck. Elevating your body temperature and heart rate too soon can increase blood flow and potentially cause the product to migrate from the targeted muscle.
Wear Your SPF: Botox stops the wrinkles caused by muscle movement, but it does not stop the skin aging caused by UV damage. You still need to apply a daily medical-grade sunscreen!
