How to Prep Your Skin for a BBL Laser Treatment at KC Wellness

So, you have officially decided to erase the sun damage, calm your rosacea, and invest in your skin by booking a Sciton Broad Band Light (BBL) treatment. Congratulations! You are on your way to one of the most transformative, confidence-boosting aesthetic treatments available in Oklahoma City.

At KC Wellness, located inside Refined OKC, our Nurse Injector, Kelli Cossey, takes the actual treatment process off your shoulders. But to achieve the absolute best, safest results, the work actually starts at home a few weeks before you sit in our chair.

Laser and light-based treatments require your skin to be at its baseline. If your skin is already compromised, irritated, or tanned before the light hits it, you increase your risk of complications and decrease the effectiveness of the treatment.

Here is your essential checklist for prepping your skin for a flawless BBL session.

1. The Golden Rule: Avoid the Sun (and Self-Tanner)

This cannot be overstated: You cannot have a BBL treatment on tanned skin. BBL works by seeking out pigment in the skin (like the melanin in a sun spot). If your entire face has an active tan, the device cannot differentiate between the sun spot you want to remove and the tan you got over the weekend. This can result in the device targeting the healthy tanned skin, leading to burns or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin).

  • Action Step: Avoid direct, unprotected sun exposure for at least 3–4 weeks prior to your appointment.

  • Self-Tanner: You must also stop using all self-tanners or spray tans on the treatment area at least two weeks beforehand. The skin must be thoroughly exfoliated to its natural shade.

2. Pause Your "Actives" and Retinoids

Medical-grade skincare is fantastic, but powerful ingredients can make your skin temporarily hyper-sensitive to light and heat.

  • Action Step: 5 to 7 days before your BBL appointment, completely stop using Retin-A (tretinoin), over-the-counter retinols, alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic/lactic acid), and beta-hydroxy acids (salicylic acid). Stick to a gentle, hydrating cleanser and a basic moisturizer.

3. Reschedule if You Have an Active Breakout or Cold Sore

BBL is excellent for killing acne-causing bacteria, but if you have a severe, painful cystic breakout, we may need to wait for the inflammation to subside. More importantly, if you are prone to cold sores (oral herpes simplex), the heat from the BBL can trigger a flare-up.

  • Action Step: If you have a history of cold sores, let Kelli know during your consultation. We can prescribe an antiviral medication (like Valtrex) to take a few days before and after your treatment to prevent an outbreak.

4. Hydrate from the Inside Out

Healthy, hydrated skin responds better to aesthetic treatments and heals significantly faster.

  • Action Step: In the week leading up to your appointment, consciously increase your water intake. If you really want to prep your cells, consider coming in a few days early for an IV Hydration Drip to flood your system with 100% bioavailable fluids and vitamins.

5. Arrive with a Clean Canvas

On the day of your appointment, we need clear access to your skin.

  • Action Step: Please arrive at the clinic with a clean face. Do not apply makeup, thick moisturizers, or heavy sunscreens. We will thoroughly cleanse your skin again once you arrive, but starting with a clean slate saves time and ensures nothing blocks the light energy.

Ready to Clear the Canvas?

Proper preparation ensures that your investment pays off. If you have any questions about your current skincare routine leading up to your BBL session, our team is always here to help.
