Why You Shouldn't Wait Until Spring to Treat Age Spots and Pigmentation
When the new year rolls around, it is natural to start thinking about "spring cleaning." Many of our patients in Oklahoma City decide they want to refresh their look and clear up their complexion right before spring break or the start of wedding season.
We often hear during consultations: "I hate these dark spots on my cheeks, but I think I’ll just wait until April to get a laser treatment so I look fresh for summer."
At KC Wellness, we always prioritize safety and education. That is why our Nurse Injector, Kelli Cossey, gently corrects this common misconception. If you wait until spring to treat hyperpigmentation, you are actually making the process much harder—and potentially riskier—for your skin.
Here is why you need to tackle those age spots now, while it is still winter.
1. Pigment Removal Takes Time
Clearing deep-seated sun damage, age spots, and melasma isn't a magical overnight process. Devices like our Sciton BBL (Broad Band Light) work by pulling pigment to the surface of the skin, where it darkens and flakes off over several days.
Often, decades of sun damage from Lake Arcadia or the Texas coast sit in multiple layers of the dermis. It usually takes a Series of 3 Treatments (which we offer for $1,200.00) spaced about 4 weeks apart to completely clear the canvas. If you start in January, your skin will be perfectly clear by April. If you wait until April to start, you will still be dealing with flaking pigment well into the summer.
2. The UV Index is Your Enemy
The biggest risk when treating hyperpigmentation is a condition called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). This occurs when newly treated, highly sensitive skin is exposed to UV radiation, causing it to overproduce melanin and create new dark spots.
In Oklahoma, the UV index starts climbing significantly by mid-March. By trying to heal from a laser treatment in the spring, you are constantly dodging the sun during patio season, outdoor sports, and spring yard work. In the winter, the UV index is low, and we naturally spend more time indoors, providing the safest possible environment for your skin to heal.
3. Heat Triggers Melasma
If your dark patches are caused by melasma (hormonal pigmentation), you have an additional enemy: heat. While traditional sun spots are triggered by UV light, melasma can be triggered simply by your body getting too hot.
Treating melasma in the cool winter months ensures that you aren't accidentally triggering a flare-up just by walking to your car in the suffocating Oklahoma summer heat. We can safely manage your pigment using gentle settings on our Moxi Laser ($550.00 per session) without the environmental risks of warmer months.
4. Arrive at Spring Already Glowing
Think of winter as your skin’s "incubation" period. By undergoing your BBL or Moxi laser series while you are bundled up in sweaters, you allow the deep collagen-building process to unfold privately. When you finally shed your winter coat, you won't just be starting your skincare journey—you will be unveiling the final, flawless result.
Stop Waiting, Start Healing
